Senior Dawn Cady named AVCA/Sport Imports National Player of the Week
Cady becomes just the second K-State player to earn the distinction

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Senior outside hitter Dawn Cady was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA)/Sport Imports National Player of the Week by the national organization this evening after leading the Wildcats to a 2-0 start in Big 12 play in wins over No. 4 Nebraska and Texas Tech. The distinction comes the day after she was named the Big 12 Conference Player of the Week.

A 5-10 outside hitter from Marshall, Minn., Cady averaged 6.13 kills per game and 4.63 digs per game in two wins last week. She collected a career-high 37 kills and 93 total attacks in the dramatic win over the Cornhuskers, both school records. The 93 attacks also set the Big 12 Conference and Nebraska Coliseum record for most in a five-game match. With 37 kills and 27 digs versus Nebraska, Cady also tied the school record with her fourth career 20/20 double-double. She posted 12 kills and 10 digs against Texas Tech Saturday to extend her streak of consecutive double-doubles to seven dating back to the Syracuse match on Sept. 4.

Cady is just the second K-State player to earn the national award and first since Kate DeClerk was honored with the distinction on Sept. 23, 1996. DeClerk, who won the award twice in her career, also garnered the honor on Sept. 26, 1995.

"This is a tremendous honor for Dawn and for this program," said head coach Jim McLaughlin. "Her play against Nebraska sparked us to victory. However, I don't think we have truly seen what she is capable of. She will continue to improve as this team continues to improve."

The 24th-ranked Kansas State Wildcats (8-2) earned their first-ever victory after 58 straight losses over Nebraska with a 3-2 win over the fourth-ranked Huskers in Lincoln on Wednesday. The Wildcats became the first conference school (Big 12 or Big Eight) to win a regular season match in the Nebraska Coliseum. After its 3-0 victory over Texas Tech on Saturday night, KSU is one of only three conference schools (Colorado and Texas are the others) to remain unbeaten in Big 12 play and will be looking for its first ever 3-0 conference start when the team hosts Iowa State on Wednesday evening.

Paced by wins over Nebraska and Texas Tech, the Wildcats tied the school's highest ever ranking by moving seven spots to No. 17 in the latest AVCA/USA Today Top 25 poll released yesterday. KSU has now been ranked in 15 consecutive polls dating back to Sept. 29, 1998, including a school-best ranking of #17 on Nov. 10 and 17 of last year. On Monday, K-State received its best-ever ranking in the Volleyball Magazine Top 20 Poll when the Wildcats earned a No. 16 ranking in the Week 5 poll.
