December 30, 2018: Tickets for the first taping of My Next Guest Needs No Introduction are available! As I understand it, the taping will be in the afternoon of January 14, 2019, in Los Angeles, with the broadcast date not yet known.
December 27, 2018: The one and only Paul Shaffer recently spent an hour with The Dennis Miller Option on PodcastOne. Topics include Paul's beginning in showbiz, his years on SNL, The Blues Brothers and, of course, 33 years with David Letterman. You can download it, if you like. The common background of Saturday Night Live that these gents share leads to all kinds of great topics, and they add to each other's stories and showbiz references. I was greatly amused when Dennis informed Paul, "You were the sidekickiest!"
December 24, 2018: Superfan Don Giller has posted a compilation, Darlene Love "Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home)" Collection (1986-2014). It runs 1:57!
December 21, 2018: Superfan Don Giller has posted a compilation, Paul Shaffer's O Holy Night Collection on Late Night, 1983-92. It's Paul's annual Cher imitation, which in the earliest years was minimalist, as they say. There was no set-up... no mention of the muff... no mention of William Conrad.
December 20, 2018: Hey, East Coast Letterman fans: You can get a ticket for a Letterman Panel at 92Y, scheduled for March 28, 2019! Dec. 17, 2018: My friend Paul Leslie has given me a scoop on an exciting interview for The Paul Leslie Hour! Paul has just posted an interview (link) with a gentleman who you've read about many times on this page, Scott Ryan. Paul visited with Scott about his amazing book, The Last Days of Letterman: The Final 6 Weeks. (Yes, I have an autographed copy!) Scott tells about how he was affected by Dave's show, how he came to write the book, and there's real interesting discussion on the musical guests in those final weeks. Especially interesting to me was the discussion on the big contributors to the book, e.g., Bill Scheft and Barbara Gaines. And The Donz got a shoutout!!

December 14, 2018: Larry King still has a show? I had no idea. Apparently it's Larry King Now. Anyway, Larry has Chris Elliott, star of stage, screen and television, on with him. Chris visits with Larry about impersonating Morton Downey, Jr., working with Dave, Scary Movie 2, playing "The Guy Under the Seats," etc. (YouTube)

December 7, 2018: Re my Dec. 5 post on the critically panned Cabin Boy: Now we learn that Chris Elliott and Adam Resnick will be present for a 25th anniversary screening of Cabin Boy in Philadelphia. The big day is set for Jan. 5, 2019. (link) Rumor has it (because I just started it) that TV's David Letterman will be in the lobby, peddling sock monkeys. What will the Fancy Lad wear to the event?

December 5, 2018: So... William Hughes of avclub.com has just posted Creators of Cabin Boy Still Haunted by Trauma of Having Made 1994's Most Relentlessly Hated Film. Chris Elliott and Adam Resnick, past Letterman writers, certainly pleased Letterman fans, as Dave had the famous cameo as a monkey peddler, and Chris, of course, was a fancy lad. December 3, 2018: Superfan Don Giller's YouTube channel has countless videos and compilations from Letterman shows... currently with 32,000,000 views! His latest production is a compilation of surprise visits by Lyle the Intern, played by Jimmi Simpson. Be sure to have a look! The writers and Jimmi came up with a classic Letterman character, in the mold of Flunky the Clown and Helen, the Ill-Tempered Ticket Lady.

November 28, 2018: Jason Anders of Full Circle magazine has interviewed Scott Ryan about writing The Last Days of Letterman. It's a look at how Scott brought the book together, and his interesting interactions with Dave's (and Johnny Carson's) former staff along the way. Also, we learn that Scott really appreciated Brian Teta, who I've met and interacted with a bit, and think is a really swell guy! Oops! I almost forgot to include the link!

October 25, 2018: I first plugged this project from Chris Elliott's family here in January 2017. Bridey Elliott had written Clara's Ghost, and had a Kickstarter campaign, for the movie filmed or recorded in the Elliott's house. Now it's finished, and there's a trailer!
October 24, 2018: Here, from Philadelphia, is the latest review of Steve Young's Bathtubs Over Broadway. I found out a few days ago that I'd missed a screening in Wichita a day earlier. It would have been a 2¼-hour trip. You, on the other hand, can avoid a mishap like mine by keeping up with the film's screenings page.

October 18, 2018: Comedian Brian Regan joined Dan Patrick, discussing his career, working with Seinfeld and Letterman, etc. (YouTube) Brian did stand-up on the Late Show 28 times (not counting being bumped two or three times). His comments about making Dave laugh start around 07:00.

October 16, 2018: Here's a fun site to check out: David Letterman Quotes, from picturequotes.com. With some of the quotes, you'll say, "Oh, of course." With others, you may wonder if Dave ever said it. Some of obviously from monologues, others are desk chat staples, and many look like they came from interviews. Note that there are currently 13 pages' worth of picture quotes. So now you know!
October 7, 2018: Currently with 635 tweets, it's Biff Henderson Memes @BiffMemes. I have no idea who's behind this Twitter account, but it's an awesome look back at Biff's remotes and other segments. Biff was with Dave from the beginning... The David Letterman Show, in 1980.
October 7, 2018: Hey! While plugging the video below, I ran across Don Giller's YouTube video of Late Show with David Letterman #0001. It includes preview and post-show coverage from WCBS-TV.
October 6, 2018: Merrill Markoe, Dave's girlfriend in the early years of Late Night, was widely credited with the offbeat take on the world that helped Dave to such success early on. Don Giller, whose YouTube channel is linked in the left-side navigation column, just posted this compilation of Merrill's four slightly cringey visits on Dave's shows, as his ex-girlfriend, between 1994 and 1998.

September 20, 2018: A Blu-ray version of Cabin Boy is out. It includes an hour-long interview with Chris Elliott and Adam Resnick, the director. He was a writer for the Late Show from 1986 to 1992. There's Dave content in the interview, because both of these gents wrote for him, and also because Dave was the old coot trying to sell monkeys.

August 21, 2018: The Last Days of Letterman is available for pre-orders, and there's a preview in the latest issue of Emmy magazine. Author Scott Ryan interviewed former Letterman writers for Top This! Writing the 10 most-laughed-at lines in late night — more than 6,000 times — was no easy task. Writers recall the process of submitting entries (and scrambling when Dave called for a change).

May 18, 2018: Today George Stroumboulopoulos published an interview with Paul Shaffer for The Strombo Show. Paul gets into great detail about his background in music, in this 38-minute audio interview on YouTube. I have so much appreciation for Paul's talent! In this interview, as usual, he's extremely forthcoming, and he has one great story after another.

April 26, 2018: Netflix has announced that David Letterman will interview Jerry Seinfeld live on May 7 for My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, as reported by Variety. Seinfeld has moved Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee to Netflix. By the way, Dave's series' title is three characters longer than Seinfeld's!

Bathtubs Over Broadway resulted from Steve Young's fascination with industrial musicals, which were created by corporations from the 50s to the 80s to promote their products or services. Steve discovered this genre while frequenting record stores when he wrote for the Letterman shows, and went searching for offbeat records for Dave's Record Collection segments. April 14, 2018: Last night, Jason Zinoman and Merrill Markoe appeared in Brooklyn at Books Are Magic, as Jason's book, Letterman: The Last Giant of Late Night, is coming out in paperback. The format was Jason interviewing Merrill. Yes, the great Don Giller captured this for YouTube.
April 11, 2018: The amazing Martin Short appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert today, and he was hilarious, as always. I haven't watched Colbert since 2015, but this was a very enjoyable segment! Colbert called him the best talk show guest of all time! Marty was plugging An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life, with Steve Martin. I saw Martin and Martin in Kansas City a couple of years ago, and enjoyed it tremendously. (YouTube)

April 3, 2018: Where have I been hiding? I just found this tweet from LastDaysOf Letterman. Scott Ryan has finished a book about the final stretch of Late Show with David Letterman, beginning with Dave's unexpected gathering of staff on the afternoon of 4/03/14 to notify them. Viewers learned of this quickly via the Internet, and Dave confirmed it that evening, on show 4010. Expect a September 2018 release. March 31, 2018: Longtime Letterman writer Steve Young just sent word to his Letterman fan friends that Bathtubs Over Broadway, an 87-minute documentary he's in, will premiere on April 21, and tickets are selling out. The documentary is about Steve's fascination with industrial musicals, created from the 50s to the 80s, which resulted in his book, Everything's Coming Up Profits. (Facebook) (tickets)

March 13, 2018: Here's a YouTube review of the editing in My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, presented by Thomas Flight. His point is there are too many cuts... that the editing becomes too noticeable. I don't feel strongly about this one way or another, but I think it's interesting. Mr. Flight seems to use Jerry Foley's directing on the Late Show as the gold standard.
